Undeniably, the subject of Big Data is increasingly appearing in the media and the power it delivers is undoubtedly a serious cause of discussion. The Swiss Federal Office of Communication has released today the results of a study concerning the advantages and dangers of Big Data and the measures Switzerland needs to consider in order to fight against the threat of data misuse.
Organisations tend to give a great value to data as they see significant opportunities it can provide for forecasting, maximizing performance, adapting their web content among other benefits. However, the article reveals that some companies are still reticent towards embracing the opportunities Big Data can bring, showing a lack of acceptance as they are confronted to internal friction related to the distribution of the roles and responsibilities for Big Data, the transparency of the actual numbers and the protection of personal data.
The study offers suggestions on a strategy to an enhanced data governance including changing the current paradigm of personal data protection allowing a closer monitoring over it, a control over an abusive use of data, a strong commitment of the state requiring its intervention and an action plan based on successful solutions adopted by other countries.
